Charles William Shipman was born in 1896 at Marehay, Derbyshire and was the son of the late George Shipman and Elizabeth Ann Warrener, of White Lion Square, Blidworth. His father George was born in 1856 at Cotgrave and died in 1900 aged 45 yrs and his mother Elizabeth Ann Rawson was born in 1865 at Blidworth, they were married in 1888 at Belper and went on to have the following children, Thomas b1888 Mansfield, Eliza Ann b1891 Ripley and Charles William b1895 Marehay. His mother re married in 1900 to John Warrener they were married in the Mansfield registration district, they went on to have the following children, John Warrener b1901, Nora Warrener b1903 and Olive Warrener b1908 all were born at Blidworth. In the 1911 census the family are living at White Lion Square at Blidworth and are shown as John Warrener 50 yrs a labourer he is living with his wife Elizabeth Ann Warrener 46 yrs and children, Thomas Shipman 22 yrs a collier driver (shown as stepson) William Shipman 15 yrs a collier driver (shown as stepson) John Warrener 10 yrs a scholar, Nora Warrener 8 yrs and Olive Warrener 3 yrs of age.
In the 1911 census he was shown as a collier a pony driver.

1st Bn Lincolnshire Regiment
Private Charles William Shipman enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Blidworth , he initially served with the service number 12459 in the Leicestershire Regiment. He was serving with the 1st battalion Lincolnshire Regiment when he was killed in action on 16th June 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
