Mark William Mills was born in 1892 at East Leake and was the son of Walter Henry a basket and wicker maker and Jane Mills née Oldham of Main Street, East Leake. His father Walter Harry was born in 1866 at East Leake, his mother Jane Oldham was born in 1867 also at East Leake, they were married in 1887 at Nottingham, they went on to have 11 children, sadly 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children all born in Eat Leake were Christopher Henry b1889, Mark William b1892, Elizabeth b1895, Maria Oldham b1902, Evelyn b1905 and Walter John Mills b1907 In the 1911 census the family lived at West Street East Leake and were shown as Walter Harry 45 yrs a basket and wicker maker, he is living with his wife Jane 44 yrs and their children, Christopher Henry 22 yrs a clerk in a basket works, Mark William 19 yrs a yard foreman in a basket works, Elizabeth 16 yrs a drapers shop assistant, Maria Oldham 9 yrs a scholar, Evelyn 6 yrs and Walter John 4 yrs of age. Mark William married his wife Eliza Hutchinson (born 30th April 1883) they lived at New Villas, East Leake and had a daughter Margaret Elizabeth born 18th May 1916. Following his death his widow Eliza was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 4th March 1918.
In 1911 he was a basket works yard foreman.

15th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Mark William Mills enlisted at Loughborough whilst residing at East Leake, he serve with the 15th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 19th June 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier 10C 10D and 11A
