James Ernest Green known as 'Ernest' was born in 1893 at Westwood and was the son of John a coal miner hewer and Amelia Green née Wilkes of Old Westwood. His father was born in 1853 at Bilston, Staffordshire and his mother Amilia Wilkes was born in 1851 at Darlston, Staffordshire they were married in 1871 at Walsall and went on to have 12 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at Old Westwood, and are shown as John 58 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Amelia 60 yrs and their children, Ernest 18 yrs a coal miner ganger and Annie 15 yrs a servant. James Ernest married his wife Lily Longdon (born 22nd December 1872) in 1913, their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district,they lived at Old Westwood, near Jacksdale. t;
In the 1911 census he is shown as a coal miner ganger.

11th Bn Essex Regiment
Private James Ernest Green enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Westwood, he served with the 11th battalion Essex Regiment. He was killed in action on 12th October 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vi-En-Artois Memorial, France.
Son of John and Amelia Green, of Old Westwood; husband of Lily Astbury (formerly Green), of Old Westwood, Jacksdale, Notts.
