Samuel Gregory (junior) was born in 1884 at Blackwell, Derbyshire and was the son of Samuel Gregory (senior) and his first wife the late Sarah Ann Clifton of 1 Ethel Cottage, Albert Avenue, Jacksdale. . His father Samuel Gregory (senior) was born in 1862 at Eastwood and his mother Sarah Ann Clifton was born in 1861 at Retford she died in 1893 aged 33 yrs they were married in 1880 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have the following children, Samuel b1884 George b1887 and Jemima b1890. His father re married Ellen Higton in 1895 their marriage was recorded in the Bakewell registration district. In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Ethel Cottage, Albert Ave, Jacksdale and are shown as Samuel 49 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Ellen 51 yrs and their son Samuel 28 yrs of age a coal miner hewer, his father states he has been married for 15 yrs and had 2 children only 1 of which survived.

170th Tunnelling Coy Royal Engineers
Sapper Samuel Gregory enlisted at Doncaster whilst residing at Bentley, Yorkshire, he served with the 170th tunnelling Company Royal Engineers and was killed in action on 9th March 1916, he is buried in Noeux-les-Mines Communal Cemetery (grave ref 1.H.4)
Gregory is listed in a local newspaper article, 'Selston Roll of Honour (Jacksdale Ward), published c1916/early 1917.
