John Pirdue was born in 1889 at Pontypridd, Glamorgan and was the son of Anthony Pidue a coal miner hewer and Sarah Ann Pirdue née Perkins of William Cottage 6 Albert Ave, Jacksdale. His father Anthony was born in 1859 at Brinsley, his mother Sarah Ann Perkins was born in 1864 also at Brinsley, they were married in 1884, their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 12 children sadly 4 of whom died in infancy or early childhood. Their surviving children were James b1884, John b1889, Joseph William b1892, Sarah Emma b1895, May b1898, Anthony b1900, Ernest b1902 and Walter b1906 all were born at Brinsley (except John who was born at Pontypridd) In the 1911 census the family are living at Albert Ave, Jacksdale and are shown as Anthony Pirdue 52 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 47 yrs and their children, James 27 yrs a coal miner hewer, John 22 yrs a coal miner hewer, Joseph William 19 yrs a coal miner hewer, Sarah Emma 16 yrs working at home, May 13 yrs a scholar, Anthony 11 yrs a scholar, Ernest 9 yrs a scholar and Walter 5 yrs of age.
In the 1911 census he is a coal miner hewer.

Private John Pidue served as John Purdy and enlisted on 24th February 1915 at Alfreton giving his age as 26 yrs and 4 months, his address was Albert Avenue, Jacksdale, he gave his occupation as that of a coal miner. He was posted to the training reserve battalion and on 26th March 1915 was posted to 1/3rd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. Posted to the 1/5th battalion Sherwood Foresters he embarked from Southampton on 12th October 1915 and arrived at Rouen the following day. He took part in the first day of the battle of the Somme where he was posted at missing and later killed in action on 1st July 1916. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France.
