John William Riley was baptised on 24th April 1890 at Ironville, he was the son of Thomas a coal miner hewer and his second wife Hannah Riley née Manton. His father Thomas was born in 1859 at Ripley, his first marriage was to Eliza Waterfall (1860-1879) whom he married on 15th February 1879 at Ironville., with whom he had a daughter Eliza Ann Riley born 1879, following his first wife's death he went on marry Hannah Manton in 1883 their marriage was recorded in the Belper registration district, they went on to have the following children, Avis b1884, John William b1890 Emma b1893, Wilfred b1897 and Percy b1901 all were born in Ironville/ Codnor Park. In the 1911 census the family are living at Fletcher Row, Ironville and are shown as Thomas 52 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Hannah 51 yrs and their children, John William 21 yrs a coal miner ganger, Wilfred 13 yrs a hosiery factory learner, and Percy 10 yrs a scholar. John William married his wife Florence Jones (born 6th July 1896) in 1917 their marriage was recorded in the Belper registration district , they lived at 12 Tank Street, Ironville. Following his death his widow Florence was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 7th October 1918.

Private John William Riley enlisted at Alfreton and served with the 1/5th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died of wounds on 31st March 1918 and is buried at Lapugnoy Military Cemetery 6.C.1
