Alfred Upton was born in 1896. According to 1901/1911 Census and Birth Index data his place of birth was Nottingham but SDGW gives York as his place of birth and enlistment so it may have been as assumption). He was the son of John Edward Upton a plasterer and Hannah Upton née Scott. His father was born in 1872 at Derby and his mother in 1874 at Nottingham. Married in 1892 in Nottingham, they went on to have 6 children one of whom died in infancy. Their children, all born at Nottingham were Alfred b.1896, Helen b.1898, John b.1902, Edward b.1903 and Harold b.1910. In 1901 the family was living at 37 Dennett Street St Ann’s Nottingham. In 1911 they lived at 128 North Sherwood Street and later at 179 North Sherwood Street Nottingham.
In 1911 he was post office messnger.

Private Alfred Upton, enlisted at York and served with the 2nd Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 19th July 1916. He is buried in Cambrin Churchyard Extension.Grave Reference: O 49
