George was born in 1896 in Nottingham he was the son of John a clay pipe maker and Alice Lokes née Waplington. His father John was born in 1857 in Darlington, his mother ALice Waplington was born in 1857 in Nottingham. They were married in Nottingham in 1875, they went on to have 11 children, however sadly three of them were to died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were : - Albert b1881, Lily b1884,Harold b1889, Ernest b1891, John b1894, George b1896, Henry b1900 and Ida b1892, all the children were born in Nottingham. In 1911 they lived at 8 New Yard , Forman Street, Nottingham and are shown as John 54 yrs a clay pipe maker head of the family he is living with his wife Alice 54 yrs a lace hand and their children, Harold 22 yrs a packer, Ernest 20 yrs a carter, John 17 yrs a street bottler, George 15 yrs an errand boy, Henry 11 yrs a schoolboy and Ida 9 yrs a schoolgirl.
In 1911 he was an errand boy.

1/6th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private George Lokes, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 1/6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, he died of wounds 11th March 1917 at the 20th Casualty Clearing Station, France. He is buried in Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery, Saulty.
Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 11th March 1919 :- “LOKES. – In loving memory of Pte. George Lokes, the dearly beloved son of John and Alice Lokes, died of wounds in France March 11th, 1917, aged 21. Two years have passed, our hearts still sore, as day by day we miss him more. – From his loving mother and father, sisters and brothers.
