83806 Private Ernest Arthur Allcock attested on 3 June 1916 in the Sherwood Foresters. He was listed as son of Henry Caleb Allcock. On 3 July 1917 he entered theatre, France and the following day was posted to 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters but on 27 July he was sent to the 2/8th battalion. On 23 January 1918 he was hospitalised and listed as 'sick'. The 29 January saw him posted to the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters and he was killed in action on 24 April 1918 whilst with the battalion and one of 234 casualties. On 24 April, the 1st battalion were in reserve when the enemy attacked using tanks and penetrated the western outskirts of Villers Bretonneux. The battalion moved in artillery formation to mount a counter attack and when they encountered the enemy, pushed them back. It was here that the CO was wounded and correct orders were not given to the battalion. They withdrew and commenced to dig in beside a road, when the enemy sent over a sustained 5.9in artillery barrage causing heavy casualties. Ernest has no known grave and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme. John Morse and Lynn Whitney
