He was the son of John Thomas and Sarah Ellen Brown and the brother of George, Annie Elizabeth, Doris May and Eliza Brown. In 1911 they lived at 33 Ronald Street New Radford Nottingham. They later lived at 1 Greek Street, Radford, Nottingham.

2nd Bn The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment)
Private John Thomas Brown, 2nd Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment, was killed in action on 1st August 1917. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate.
In memoriam published 1st August 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BROWN. – In loving memory of Pte. J. T. Brown, killed in action August 1st, 1917, aged 19.
