1st Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Harry Bailey joined the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters after 1 January 1916. The 1st Battalion had suffered greatly during the German Spring offensives and was sent to a 'quieter' area to recover and recoup. On 27 May 1918 the battalion the enemy attacked along the Chemin des Dames lines, exactly the location of the resting Divisions. As soon as the attack began the battalion was ordered up to and had reached the (river) Aisne line. 2/Lt Greaves (later DSO, MC and two bars; Brother of Fred VC) led details of men in a fighting retirement and by this time it was chaotic for the British. At some point Harry was killed in action and like so many, has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial. John Morse
