He was the son of John Henry and Harriet Barber and the brother of Alice and Elsie Barber. In 1901 they lived at 51 King's Meadow Road Meadows Nottingham. John Henry Barber later moved to 2 Baden Terrace Rupert Street Meadows Nottingham.

2nd Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Corporal Harold Edwin Barber enlisted on 10th August 1908 at Nottingham and served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was appointed Lance Corporal 10th February 1914 and went to France 8th September 1914. He was promoted Corporal 21st September 1914 and was killed in action during a German attack at Ennetteres, France, 20th October 1914, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
