He was the son of Joseph and Jane Morrell and the brother of Elizabeth, Alice, George and Joseph Morrell. In 1881 and 1891, the family lived at 120, Wilford Road and in 1901 at 133, Arkwright Street, (both Meadows, Nottingham). Joseph Morrell was a coal merchant and later a grocer. A/M/J/1916, Samuel Claude married Adele Symonds (b.4/3/1889) at Ormskirk, Lancashire and their daughter Margaret Evelyn Morrell was born 12th July 1916. With effect from 7/11/1917, Adele Morrell received a weekly pension of 18s/9d.

He enlisted at Nottingham and served initially (17913) with 9th Bn Sherwood Foresters. He first entered theatre (France) 1/7/1915. He died of wounds. Samuel Claude Morrell is cited as Claude Morrell on military records.
