He was the son of William and Elizabeth Brown of Cross Hill Gringley on the Hill Retford. He was the husband of Frances Mary Brown of 7, Skeeby Road Richmond Yorkshire.

Army Service Corps
William enlisted into the Richmond Regiment at Richmond and served with the 705th Company of the Army Service Corps and was a driver in the Transport Corps, and servant to Major Buck-Keene. He had previously served in the Army during the Boer War. It is believed that he was killed instantly during an enemy air raid after a bomb was dropped and landed amongst him and his colleagues. He is buried in Mikra British Cemetery Kalamaria, Greece (Grave Reference: 1613).
