He was employed as miner at Selston by Barber Walker. He played regularly for Eastwood Collieries Cricket Club.

He enlisted at Derby. He was granted leave on June 4th 1916 to attend his mother's funeral but arrived too late for the burial. he was back in the line by June 13th and was killed near Gommecourt.
Walter saxton enlisted on the 15th march 1915, Walter embarked from Southampton on the 10/11/15 and disembarked in Rouen on the 11/11/15 joined unit in the field on the 14/11/15 . Walter Saxton's son Walter died in 1913 and Jack Saxton died in 1976/77
