2nd battalion left London for Southampton and embarked for France on 12/08/1914 in the S.S. 'Cawdor Castle.' They landed at Le Havre the next day and reached Mons in time to take part in the battle and the Great Retreat that followed.The battalion dug in at Villers Cotterets on 01/09/1914 and engaged the enemy before continuing to retire. They turned and attacked the Germans on the Marne and then pursued them across the River Ausne, reaching Soupir on 14/09/1914. Cook was killed in action on 20/09/1914, the day before the battalion was relieves. he was buried at Guards Grave No. 2, Villers Cotterets Forest.Pte.
