Pte. Carnell landed in France on 18th May 1915 , he was killed in action on 30th July 1916 at the start of the Third Battle of Tpres. His body was never recovered, but his name was commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres.
In memoriam published 31st July 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “CARNELL. – Leonard Swift Carnell, K.R.R., son of Mr. and Mrs. Carnell, 33, Mundella-road, missing and wounded July 30th, 1915, now reported dead July 20th, 1916.
