Sgt. Deakin served with the 2/6th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters and was in the front line when the German spring offensive Operation Michael was launched. The Germans taking advantage of thick fog and vastly greater numbers soon broke through the British lines, though many battalions fought to the end. Sgt Deakin was killed on the first day of the offensive and his body was never recovered. However, his name was commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
