William Hines was born in 1888 at Radford, Nottingham and was the son of William Hines (senior) a general labourer in a gas works and Alice Hines née Wragg of 31 Pleasant Row Hyson Green, Nottingham. His father William (senior) was born in 1861 at Ashby Del La Zouch and his mother Alice Wragg was born in 1861 at Radford, they were married in 1882 at Nottingham and went on to have 10 children, sadly three were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were all born in the Radford area and were Thomas b1880, Marian b1882, George b1884, William b1888, Emily b1892, Leonard b1896 and Nellie b1898. In the 1911 census the family are living at 31 Pleasant Row, Hyson Green and are shown as William 50 yrs a general labourer at gas works, he is living with his wife Alice 50 yrs and their children Emily 19 yrs a cigar maker, Leonard 15 yrs a needle maker and Nellie 13 yrs a scholar. By the 1911 census William (Junior) has left the family home and has joined the Army, he is living at Fort Brockhurst barracks, Gosport and is shown as a gunner 23 yrs of age with the Royal Field Artillery. He married his wife Elizabeth E James in 1912 at Nottingham, she lived at 3 Victoria Terrace Hartley Road Nottingham. His address listed on his photograph published on 5th April 1916 was 16 Leonard Street, Nottingham,

Royal Field Artillery
Gunner William Hines, enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 131st Battery, 19th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He landed in France on 21st December 1914 and was killed in action on 14th March 1915. His body was never identified and he is, therefore, commemorated on the Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium
