Cecil Simpson was born in 1889 he was the son of the late George a butcher and Sarah Ann Simpson née Brewin. of Rose Cottage Hickling Nottinghamshire. George was born in 1852 at Cotgrave, he died in 1900 aged 48 yrs, Sarah Ann Brewin was born in 1856 at Shoby, Leicestershire, they were married in 1880 their marriage was recorded in the Melton Mowbray registration district. They had 8 children. In 1911 the family are living at Rose Cottage, Hickling, Sarah Ann 55 yrs and a widow, she is living with 3 of her children, Ida 29 yrs working at home, Ronald 21 yrs a butcher and Rowland 20 yrs a grazier.

13th Bn Alexandra Princess of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Regiment)
Corporal Cecil Simpson enlisted at Loughborough, he served initially with the service number 32097 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. Later transferring to the 13th battalion Yorkshire Regiment he was killed in action on 23rd November 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval.
His brother, Lance Corporal Charlie Simpson, 13th Bn Yorkshire Regiment, was killed 12 July 1917 age 34.
