John Rawson was born on 5th September 1878 at Spital Hill , Clarborough and was the son of the late William a maltster and Betsy Rawson née Huckerby of 26 Water Lane, Newark. His father William was born in 1851 at Newark and died in 1903 aged 53 yrs, his mother Betsy Huckerby was born in 1851 at Newark, they were married in 1870 at Newark and went on to have the following children, George b1871, Eliza b1872, Henry b1876, John b1878, Ellen b1881, Martha b1883 and Mary Ann b1885. John married his wife Mary Cluro on 29th December 1901 at St Leonards Church Newark, and lived at 5, Water Lane, Newark, they went on to have the following children all born in Newark, Joseph born 5th April 1902, Mary born 28th July 1903, William b1906, John born 26th October 1906, Doris born 28th June 1908, Ruth b1912, William b1914 and George b1916. In the 1911 census the family are living at 5 Water Lane, Newark and are shown as John 32 yrs a maltster, he is living with his wife Mary 29 yrs and their children, Joseph 8 yrs a scholar, Mary 7 yrs a scholar, William 5 yrs, John 4 yrs and Doris 2 yrs. In the same 1911 census his mother is living at 26 Water Lane, Newark, she is shown as a widow, 60 yrs and is living with her son George 40 yrs a labourer.

Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private John Rawson attested on 10th December 1915 at Newark, he was posted to the reserves the following day. He was mobilised on 10th August 1916 and was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went to France on 24th November 1916 where he served until 7th January 1917 and returned to England. He returned to France on 7th May 1917 and served until 6th November 1917 when he was once again returned to England. He was discharged from the Army on 15th December 1917 being no longer physically fit for war service he was 39 yrs of age. He was issued with a silver war badge number 291684. He died on 27th February 1920 and is buried at Newark-upon-Trent Cemetery, Nottinghamshire
