James William Morton Sooley was born in 1896 at Market Harborough and was the son of James Morton Sooley a farm labourer and Margaret Sooley née Mitson of 45 London Road Newark. His father James Morton Sooley was born in 1866 at Elm Cambridgeshire and his mother Margaret Edith Mitson was born in 1868 at Walstoken, Norfolk, they were married in 1893 at Wisbech and went on to have 6 children sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Percy b1894 Wisbech, James b1896 Market Harborough, Arthur b1897 Market Harborough, Mabel b1899 Reversby, Leicestershire, and Ernest b1903 in Rutland. In the 1911 census the family were living at North Street, Digby, Lincolnshire and were shown as John 44 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Margaret 43 yrs and their children Percy 17 yrs a farm labourer, Mabel 12 yrs a scholar and Ernest 8 yrs. It has not been possible to find James on the 1911 census, he is not shown at the home address.

2nd Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private James William Morton Sooley enlisted at Newark and served with 'C' Company 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 28th June 1915 was killed in action on 10th March 1917 at Philosophie, he is buried at Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, Pas de Calais, France.
