William James Herapath was born in 1898 at Kensington, London and was the son of the late James a compositor and Annie Rebecca Herapath née Malin of Main Road, Cotgrave. His father was born in 1870 at Kensington, London, he died in 1908 aged 38 yrs, his mother Annie Rebecca Malin was born in 1863 at Cotgrave, they were married on 16rh February 1890 at St George the Martyr Church in London, they went on to have the following children, Dorothy Ellen Matilda b1890 Bloomsbury, London, Lilian Mary b1893 Bingham, Frederick b1896 Kensington and William James b1898 Kensington. In the 1911 census the family are living at Main Street, Cotgrave and are shown as Rebecca Hesapath 47 yrs a widow she is living with her children Frederick 15 yrs a scholar and William James 12 yrs a scholar.

Lance Corporal William James Herapath enlisted on 19th November 1914 at Newark, he gave his age as 18 yrs ( he was actually only 16 yrs old at this time ) and his occupation as that of a gardener, his next of kin was his mother Rebecca he was posted to the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 8th December 1914. He embarked from Southampton on 28th June 1915, disembarking the following day at Rouen. He was killed in action on 14th October 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial Panel 87 to 89,
