Percy Fretwell was born in 1888 at Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, and lived at Creswell, Derbyshire. He was the son of Mary Ann Fretwell and the grandson of John and Phoebe Fretwell. Mary Ann Fretwell married George Langton in 1893 at Ripley. In 1911, Percy was living with his grandparents at 8 Welbeck Street, Creswell. John Fretwell (66) was a colliery banksman and Phoebe Fretwell (62). Also living at the address were his uncle Godfrey Fretwell (28), a coal miner hewer, and his aunt Mabel (22) no occupation listed. Percy married Thirza Cooper on 7th August 1911 at St Peters Church, Elmton, Derbyshire (his father was named as George Fretwell on the marriage register). They had the following children, Ada born 22nd October 1911, Lottie born 12th November 1912 and Adelaide born 17th July 1914. They lived at 76, Duke Street, Creswell. With effect from 26 February 1917, Thirza was awarded a weekly pension of 20 shillings and 6 pence a week.
He was a coal miner prior to enlisting.

Percy Fretwell enlisted at Mansfield, residence Creswell. He was killed in action 7th July 1916 in the attack on the German positions at Quadrangle Support, near Contalmaison, during the Battle of the Somme. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France (Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A).
