Charles Alfred Lindsey was born in 1895 at Newthorpe and was the son of the late Charles a coal miner and Sarah Lindsey née Meakin of Wharf Lane Tibshelf Alfreton Derbyshire. His father Charles was born in 1861 at Walton on the Wolds, he had previously been married to Martha Hatton (1864- 1891) and with whom he had 5 children. He died in 1918 aged 57 yrs, he married his second wife Sarah Meakin (b1873 Basford) in 1892 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have the following children, Susan b1892 Newthorpe, Charles Alfred b1895 Newthorpe, Elizabeth b1898 Newthorpe, William b1900 Shirebrook, Baden b1903 Langley Mill, Annie b1907 New Wilington and Henry b1909 Tibshelf. In the 1911 census the family are living at 25 Lincoln Street, Tibshelf and are shown as Charles 50 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Sarah 38 yrs and their children, Charles Alfred 16 yrs a coal miner ganger, Elizabeth 13 yrs a scholar, William 11 yrs a scholar, Baden 8 yrs, Annie 4 yrs and Henry 2 yrs of age.
He was a colliery ganger in the 1911 census.

Private Charles Alfred Lindsey enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Tibshelf, he served with the 16th Lancers (The Queen's). He was killed in action on 21st February 1915 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
