Scott Ewart Carlin was born in 1899 the son of Thomas (a coal miner) and Sarah Ann Elizabeth Carlin née Clifford of 16a, Church Street, Heanor, Derbyshire. Thomas was born in 1865 at Eastwood and died in 1913 aged 48. Sarah Ann Elizabeth Clifford was born in 1867 also at Eastwood. Married on 26th February 1887 at Nottingham Registry Office, they had the following children (all born at Eastwood) - John William b.1888, Mary Ann b.1889, Lewis b.1891, Isaac b.1893, Jacob Clifford b.1894, Gertrude b.1896 Scott Ewart b.1899, Doris b.1901, Gladys b.1905 and Phoebe Carlin b.1907. In 1911, Thomas and Sarah Ann were living at Church View, Church Square, Heanor along with their ten children. John William was a coal miner loader, Mary Ann worked at home, Lewis and Isaac were hewers at the pit, Jacob Clifford a coal mine wagoner, Gertrude a hosiery factory hand, Scott and Doris were at school, Gladys and Phoebe were at home.
Scott Carlin was a collier roadman upon enlistment.

Scott Ewart Carlin initially enlisted on 12th July 1915 at Nottingham giving a false age of 19 years and 6 months. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters. However, on 10th December 1915 he was discharged from the army having given a mis-statement as to his age on enlistment. He later enlisted at Ilkeston and served with the Lincolnshire Regiment. He was buried at Erquelinnes Communal Cemetery, Belgium.
