Hosea Wheatcroft (junior) was born in 1895 at Eastwood and was the son of Hosea Wheatcroft (senior) a coal miner and Fanny Wheatcroft née Wardle of 5 Victoria Street, Shirebrook. His father Hosea (senior) was born in 1864 at Basford, his mother Fanny Wardle was born in 1864 also at Basford, they were married in 1888 at Nottingham they had 10 children 4 of whom died in infancy or early childhood before the 1911 census. In the 1911 census the family are living at 5 Victoria Street, Shirebrook and are shown as Hosea 47 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Fanny 47 yrs and their children Fanny 18 yrs no occupation listed, Hosea 15 yrs a pit boy pony driver, Harold 13 yrs a pit boy pony driver and John 6 yrs of age. Hosea (junior) marries his wife Winifred Stocks born 4th May 1893, on 26th June 1915 at the Mansfield Registry Office, his wife bring a child to the marriage Joyce Stocks born May 1915 they live at 48 Sandy Lane, Mansfield and go on to have another daughter Winifred Gertrude born July 196. Following his death his widow Winifred was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week which commence on 7th May 1917.

17th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Hosea Wheatcroft enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Shirebrook, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action 0n 10th August 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
