William Ashley was born in 1894 the son of Allen a coal miner and Sarah Ashley née Clarke of Main Road, Blidworth Bottoms, Blidworth, Nottinghamshire. Allen was born in 1866 at Blidworth Sarah Clarke was born in 1872 at Blidworth married in 1887 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield Registration district, they went on to have the following children, John b1888. Laura b1890, Hannah b1891, William b1894, Allen b1897 and Henrietta b1902, all were born at Blidworth. In 1911 William 16 yrs is a boarder and col miner ganger, he is living with his mother Sarah a 38 yrs a servant, they are both living with Harry Ball 34 yrs a widow and his 3 children at Alma Road, Selston. William married Doris Brookes in 1914, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they lived at Bagthorpe near Jacksdale and had a daughter Doris Ida born July 1914. Following his death his widow Doris was awarded a pension of 21 shillings and 8 pence from 21st October 1918 His widow later re married and became Doris Hodgkinson (formerly Ashley), and lived at The Sun Inn, Town Street, Pinxton, Derbyshire.

Corporal William Ashley enlisted at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, he went to France in July 1915 and was killed in action 24th March 1918, whilst holding the line at Rocquigny, France. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial Pas de Calais France.
