William Ernest Beardsley (junior) was born in 1898 the son of former Regimental Sergeant Major and later publican William Ernest Beardsley (senior) and Mary Ann Beardsley, née Holmes of 34, Alfreton Rd., Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts. William Ernest (senior) was born in 1871, Mary Ann Holmes was born in 1870 both were born in Nottingham, married on 6th January 1894 at Nottingham they had 6 children. In 1911 the family are living at the Grapes Tavern, Lime Street, Hull.

Private William Ernest Beardsley, enlisted on 7th September 1914, giving a false age of 19 yrs (he was born in 1898) he served with 1/8th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire) Regiment. He embarked from Southampton on 28th June 1915 landing at Rouen the following day. He died of a shell wound to the head on 13th July 1916. He is buried in Bellacourt Military Cemetery, Riviere.
Born in Belgaum, India, he was the 19 year-old son of Col. Sgt. William Ernest Beardsley, of 34 Alfreton Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield. The father may well have enlisted the son, as he was working as a recruiting official at Mansfield Town Hall at the time of William Ernest Beardsley junior's enlistment there on 7th September 1914, Above information is from Jim Grundy and his facebook pages Small Town Great War Hucknall 1914-1918
