George was born at Marnham in 1895 and was the son of Ephraim a farm labourer and Emma Portas, they live in Sturton and his parents had a very large family having 11 children. In the 1911 census the family are still living in Sturton with 5 of their children , however George has moved out and is now living as a lodger with Tom Wilkinson and his family at 28 Lincoln Terrace, Gainsborough. He meets his future wife Nellie while in Gainsborough and they are married and live at 14 Britannia Terrace, Gainsborough,

21st Bn (Tyneside Scottish) Northumberland Fusiliers
His service records does not appear to have survived, however the documents Soldiers Died in the Great War states he was born at Markham ( 3 census returns state Marnham so possibly a typo ) and that he enlisted in Sheffield .He first served with service number 25451 in the York and Lancaster Regiment and was later transferred to the 21st Bn Tyneside Scottish Northumberland Fusiliers and that he was killed in action on 22nd August 1917 he is buried in Hargicourt British cemetery, France
