James was born in Clayworth in 1898 and was the son of James Harris an engineer's draughtsman and Lizzie Widdowson (nee French) . We find him and his family on the 1911 census living in North Street, Sturton Le Steeple he is 13 years of age and at school he has a younger brother Frank and younger sister Gladys Mary

James enlisted on 31st May 1916 and served with the Leicestershire Regiment. However he was discharged on 11th August 1917 from the army under Kings Regulations Para 392 (unfit for duty ) due to sickness and was awarded a silver war badge number 228,980. He died in December 1918 aged 20 years.
