Johnson was originally a member of 45th Manitoba Rangers who arrived in Liverpool from Canada on 25th March 1916 with 38 officers and 1,119 other ranks. The unit was, however, broken up to provide reinforcements for other units and that must have been when Johnson was sent to 52nd Battalion. He was killed during the Battle of Flers-Courcelette on the Somme and is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
Nottingham Post obituary (abridged), 6 October 1916: 'Johnson. Killed in action September 15th, Joseph Harold Johnson, Canadians, elder son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Johnson, Seeley Road, Nottingham.'
