Edmund Charles Roberts was born in 1894 the son of Samuel a coal miner hewer and his first wife the late Florence May Roberts née Cox of Cross Street, Castle Greasley. Samuel was born in 1866 at Roliston and Florence May Cox was born in 1863 in Hampstead, London, she died in 1898 at Rosliston aged 35 yrs, they were married on 7th August 1888 at Newhall, Derbyshire, they went on to have 5 children. His father later re married to Jane Harriett Bennett in 1902 their marriage is recorded in the Burton upon Trent registration district, he had a further 3 children with his second wife. In 1911 the family were living at Cross Street, Castle Greasley, Samuel is 45 yrs and a coal miner hewer, he is living with his second wife Jane Harriett 48 yrs and their children. In 1911 Edmund is 17 yrs of age and a farm labourer but he is no longer living at the family home (his entry crossed out on the census)
He was a farm labourer and a carter upon enlistment.

Private Edmund Charles Roberts enlisted on 11th December 1915 at Coalville, giving his age as 21 yrs and 7 months he was a carter, his next of kin was his father Samuel he was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war on 26th January 1916 at Leicester where he was posted to the Leicestershire Regiment. He was transferred on 25th March 1916 to the Duke of Wellingtons West Riding Regiment. Landing in France on 1st April 1916 he was killed in action on 11th December 1916 and is buried at at Quarry Cemetery, Mountauban, Somme, France.
