William was born in 1899 the son of Arthur and Jane Whitehead of 46 Ingram Road, Bulwell, Nottingham. His father Arthur died on 10 March 1938 aged 57 years, and his mother Jane died on 5 November 1972 aged 92.

Private William Arthur Whitehead, served with the 1/5th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he died of wounds and pneumonia on 28th October 1918. He is buried in Carlton Cemetery.(grave ref. A.6M.3).
Inscription on headstone, Carlton Cemetery, Nottingham: 'In loving memory of William Arthur, dearly loved and only son of Arthur & Jane Whitehead, died of wounds received in action Oct. 28th 1918, aged 19 years. Ever in our thoughts. Also of Arthur, the dear husband of Jane Whitehead, who passed away March 10th 1938 aged 57 years. At rest. My beloved mother died Nov. 5, 1972, aged 92. And daughter Nancy Foulds, died April 3, 1989, aged 82.' Nottingham Evening Post 28th October 1918 : “WHITEHEAD. – Private Whitehead (Willie), died of wounds October 28th, 1918. Those who loved him best, missed him most. – From his heart-broken mam, dad, sisters. Nottingham Evening Post 28th October 1918: “WHITEHEAD. – In loving memory of our dear nephew, Private Willie Whitehead, died October 28th, 1918, through wounds.
