Joseph James Whitehouse was born in 1874 at Springfields, Staffordshire Joseph James married Frances Ellen Braithwaite (born 27th May 1885 ) in 1904 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they lived at Lynncroft Eastwood Nottinghamshire and had the following children, Hannah Laura born April 1905, Harry born October 1906, Clara Elizabeth born October 1908, Edward Edmund born December 1911 and Joseph James Whitehouse born January 1916. In the 1911 census the family are living at Chewton, Hill Top, Eastwood and are shown as Joseph James Whitehouse 37 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Frances Ellen 26 yrs and their children, Hannah Laura 6 yrs, Harry 4 yrs, Clara Elizabeth 2 yrs and Edward Edmund 1 year of age, also living with them is his widowed mother Mary Whitehouse 63 yrs. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 24 shillings and 6 pence a week which commenced on 17th January 1916. In 1919 his widow re married to Thomas Price their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district.
A former Metropolitan Police officer he lived on Chewton Street Hill Top and worked at High Park Colliery as a coal miner hewer

South Staffordshire Regiment
Private Joseph James Whitehouse enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Eastwood in September 1914 and served with 2nd battalion South Staffordshire Regiment. He died of wounds at No 1 casualty clearing station and is buried at Chocques Military Cemetery, France.
