Horace Hardy was born in 1896 at Arnold and was the son of Thomas a colliery labourer and Mary Mayfield, née Hardy of 66 Furlong Avenue Arnold. His father Thomas was born in 1865 at Arnold and his mother Mary Hardy was born in 1866also in Arnold, they were married in 1885, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have the following children, all of whom were born in Arnold, William b1885, Thomas b1886, Eliza b1888, James b1892, Elsie b1900, George b1904 and Winifred Mayfield b1908. In the 1911 census they lived on High Street Avenue Arnold and were shown as Thomas Mayfield 46 yrs a colliery labourer, he is living with his wife Mary 45 yrs and their children, Thomas 25 yrs a twist hand, Eliza 23 yrs a hosiery finisher, James 19 yrs a cotton pattern hand, Horace 15 yrs a coal miner ganger, Elsie 11 yrs a scholar, George 7 yrs a scholar and Winifred 3 yrs of age.
He was educated at the British School Arnold and employed as a coal miner (ganger).

9th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Horace Mayfield enlisted at Nottigham at the outbreak of the war he enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters and was posted to the newly formed Kitchener's 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters at Derby. His battalion were at Helles, Gallipoli between the 20th and 31st July 1915, and on the 7th August they landed at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli. During an advance by his battalion on the 9th August he was killed in action. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli Turkey.
