James was born at Arnold in 1893, the son of Charles a council labourer and Eliza Hudson née Warton. His father Charles was born in 1861 in Arnold and his mother was born in 1863 also in Arnold. They were married in the last quarter of 1881 at Arnold and went on to have 7 children , however sadly one died in infancy prior to 1911, their surviving children were : - William b1887, Henry b1890, James b1893, Walter b1898, Albert b1902 and Hilda b1905, all the children were born in Arnold. In the 1911 census the family are living at 6 West Street, Arnold, and are shown as Charles 50 yrs a council labourer, he is living with his wife Eliza 48 yrs and their children Henry 21 yrs a coal miner , James 17 years of age and his occupation is that of coal miner. Walter 13 yrs, an errand boy , Albert 9 yrs and Hilda 6 yrs both scholars. Their eldest son William has left the family home and is living at 20 Winchester Terrace, Sherwood, Nottingham, he is 24 yrs of age, a twisthand in the lace making industry, he is living with his wife Beatrice Mabel (nee Haines) 21 yrs a hand ironer in the local laundry, they have a son William Ernest who was born on 12th July 1910.

2nd Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
He enlisted at Nottingham, into the Sherwood Foresters and was posted to the 2nd battalion, he landed in France on 8th September 1914 and some time later he was promoted to Corporal. He died on the 5th October 1917 of blood poisoning, but what caused the poisoning we are not able to say. It could have been from natural causes or it could have been as the result of a wound. He is buried at Chocques Military Cemetery, France
