Joseph Kelk was born in 1897 he was the son of William Kelk a coal miner hewer and the late Elizabeth Kelk née Lumb of 13 Eighth Avenue, Forest Town. William Kelk was born in 1871 in Wales, Yorkshire, Elizabeth Lumb was born in 1871 at Thorncliffe, Yorkshire, she died in 1909 at Mansfield aged 38 yrs they were married on 2nd December 1889 at Mexborough, they had 7 children. In 1911 the family lived at 13 8th Avenue, Forest Town, Mansfield, William 40 yrs a widow is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his children including Joseph 13 yrs a coal miner.

15th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Joseph Kelk enlisted on 9th September 1914, he was 18 years old, he was a coal miner. He served with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. However he was discharged as medically unfit on 3rd July 1916 with a Perforated tympanum (burst eardrum). Hearing in left ear very defective , not able to hear a whistle and copious pus. He never served abroad. He later re enlisted or was called up he served with the 15th battalion Sherwood Foresters he died on 16th January 1919 of cerebro spinal meningitis at 3rd Canadian Station Hospital and is buried at Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France.
