James Henry Gleen was born in 1895 he was the only son of Charles Ratcliffe a steam motor driver and Elizabeth Glenn, née Sands of 4 Dallas Street, Mansfield. Charles Ratcliffe Glenn was born in 1871 at Yardley Gobion, Northamptonshire, Elizabeth Sands was born in 1869 at New Bolingbrook, Lincolnshire, they were married on 22nd May 1893 at St Wilfred's Church, Calverley, Yorkshire. In 1911 the family were living at 4 Dallas Street, Mansfield Charles Ratcliffe 40 yrs a steam motor driver, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 42 yrs and their son James Henry 16 yrs an apprentice steam motor driver.

Corporal James Henry Glenn enlisted at Newark, he initially served with Sherwood Foresters (service no 3153). He landed in France on 29th June 1915. He was serving with the Machine Gun Corps when he died of wounds on 18th September 1917 and is buried at Voormezeele Enclosure , Belgium.
