Albert Ball was the son of Samuel Ball and Harriett Simons, who married in Nottingham in 1881. They had nine children, seven of whom were alive in 1911. These were; Arthur, born in 1882, Jane, born in 1883, Gertrude, born in 1885, Clara, born in 1887, May, born in 1890, Samuel Neal, born in 1892 and Albert, born in 1896. They family lived at 195 Norton Street, Radford and 372 Alfreton Road, Radford before moving to 18, Wordsworth Rd., Radford, Nottingham. Samuel Ball was a lace worker and died in Nottingham in 1933. Harriet died in 1910.

1/5th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Pte. ball enlisted on 14/10/1914 in 5th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters at Derby. He was promoted to acting corporal on 16/10/1915, but reverted to private on 13/03/1916. He embarked from Southampton on that day, arriving at Rouen on 14/10/1915. He was sent to the front on 30/03/1916. He was killed in action on the opening day of the Battle of the Somme, 01/07/1916. His body was never recovered but his name was commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
