Charles was born in Johannesburg, South Africa the son of Rose Annie Grant (née Davies) and the brother of Edwin John Grant. In 1901 Rose Annie Grant a widow lived with her parents Richard and Elizabeth Davies at 1 Cross Houses Montgomery Wales. In 1911 he was living with John and Martha Brown and their daughter Lily at 43 Trent Street Retford and is described on the census as 'adopted'.
In 1911 he was an apprentice heating engineer.

Charles enlisted at Retford and served with the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters he was with the battalion on Gallipoli and was killed in action on the day of 'The great gale', when a heavy South West gale brought a thunderstorm accompanied by torrents of rain, which lasted for 24 hours. Trenches were flooded and men washed away to their deaths. Then the wind changed and there was two days of snow and blizzards. Pte Charles Henry Grant Retford Times 24 Dec 1915 Retford Soldiers Killed Mrs Grant, housekeeper at West Retford Hall received the sad intelligence on Sunday Morning last from the War Office that her son Pte Charles Henry Grant, 9th Sherwood Foresters was killed in action in the Dardanelles on November 27th last. He was one of the first at Retford to volunteer for active service and underwent his training at Belton Park, Grantham. He went with his Regiment to the Dardanelles on July 1st last. The deceased, who was only 19 years of age last May was employed for about three years at Messrs G Hopkinson and Son, painters and decorators, Market Square. He was born at Johannasburg, South Africa, and his father, Mr J H Grant died at Cape Town in January 1901. The young soldier always looked on the bright side of life and was of a cheerful disposition. He was a regular worshipper at West Retford Church. Great sympathy is felt for his mother in her sad bereavement. John Morse
