William was born in 1874 in Nottingham , he married his wife Mary Ann Dickinson in 1895 in Nottingham they lived at 7, Wordsworth Rd., Radford Boulevard, Nottingham. They had 4 daughters all born in Nottingham Ethel b1895, Lizzie b1898, Mabel b1899 and Millie b1907. In the 1911 census the family are living at 42 Albert Ave, Nottingham and are shown as William 38 yrs a land quarry foreman, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 38 yrs and their children Ethel 16 yrs a lace trade worker, Lizzie 13 yrs a tobacco trade worker, Mabel 12 yrs a scholar and Millie 4 yrs.

Private
74th Coy Machine Gun Corps
Private William Wheatcroft Rhodes, initially served with service number 26094 in the South Lancashire Regiment, he later transferred and served with the 74th Company Machine Gun Corps, he died of wounds at the 5th Southern General Hospital, Portsmouth, on 22nd May 1916. His body was returned to Nottingham, where he is buried in the General Cemetery, his name is commemorated on the screen wall.
In memoriam published on 22nd May 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “RHODES. – In loving memoriam of my dear husband, Private William Rhodes, died of wounds May 22nd, 1916, at Portsmouth Hospital. Days of sadness still come o'er us, tears of sorrow often flow, memory keeps our loved one near us, whom God claimed a year ago. – from his sorrowing wife, daughters, and his adopted son Sam (serving in France). “RHODES. – In loving memory of Private William Rhodes, M.G.C., died of wounds May 22nd, 1916. One year has passed, our hearts still sore, as time goes on we miss him more. – Silently mourned by his loving mother, M. J.
