Samuel Noble was born in 1890 at Nottingham and was the son of Herbert an iron foundry striker and Mary Maria Nobel, née Ward of 10, Bridge Row, Mount Street, Nottingham. His father Herbert was born in 1852 at Derby, his mother Mary Maria Ward was born in 1858 at Ilkeston, they were married in 1878 at Nottingham, they went on to have 7 children, sadly 4 died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were , John b1882 Nottingham, Samuel b1890 Nottingham and Alice Louisa b1896 Ilkeston. In the 1911 census the family are living at 10 Bridge Row, Mount Street, Nottingham. and are shown as Herbert Noble 59 yrs an iron foundry striker, he is living with his wife Mary Maria 53 yrs and their children, John 29 yrs a coal miner labourer, Samuel 21 yrs a book binder and Alice Louisa 15 yrs an errand girl. Samuel married his wife Gertrude Alice Agutters in 1914 at Nottingham, they lived at 10, King’s Lynn Terrace, Nottingham.
He was a bookbinder prior to enlisting

1/7th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Samuel Noble enlisted on 20th January 1915 at Nottingham. He went to France 28th June 1915 and suffered gunshot wounds to his right arm, 28th March 1916. He was admitted to 3rd General Hospital, Le Treport, France 31st March 1916. He rejoined his battalion 14th May 1916 and was killed in action, 1st July 1916, during the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He is buried in Gommercourt Wood New Cemetery, Foncquevillers (grave ref. II.G.1).
Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 21 September 1916: 'Private S Noble (Sherwood Foresters), 10 King's Lynn Terrace, Nottingham, killed in action 1 July aged 26.'
