He was the son of John, a brewer's labourer, and Mary Jane Edwards of 27 Victoria Street Kimberley Nottingham and the brother of Albert, Edith and James Edwards (1901 Census). He was the husband of Frances (Crump) Edwards of 69 Bentley Road Doncaster (Medal Roll). The couple married J/F/M 1917 a few months before his death.
In 1901, aged 12, Arthur Edwards was a hairdresser's assistant.

He served as a sergeant, deploying to France 27/8/1915 and was commissioned 26/6/1917 (Medal Roll).
CWGC lists his battalion as 3rd York and Lancaster whereas the headstones cites 8th. CWGC has 17/9/1917 as date of death (corroborated by the Medal Roll) and the headstone 18/9/1917.
