Ernest Marlowe was born in 1881 at Hucknall and was the son of William a joiner/carpenter and Lucy Marlowe née Skidmore of Hucknall. His father William was born in 1846 in Blidworth, he died in 1909 aged 63 yrs, his mother Lucy Skidmore was born in 1843 at Hucknall, they were married in 1867 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have the folowing children, John Albert b1868 Basford, Walter b1875 Newham, Frances Sarah b1877 Selston, Lucy Ada b1879 Selson, Ernest b1881 Hucknall and Herbert b1886 Hucknall. Ernest married his wife Lavinia Slater (born 5th December 1877 Mapperley, Derbyshire) in 1901, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they lived at 27 The Crescent, Woodlands, Doncaster. They went on to have the following children, Hilda b1902, Henry Ernest b27th April 1904, born Carlton, Noel Frank born 4th September 1905, Carlton, Norah born 31st December 1907, Carlton, Constance born 5th April 1910, Brodsworth, Yorkshire, Joseph Robert born 3rd September 1912, Charles born 28th March 1914 and Lavinia born 9th September 1916. In the 1911 census the family are living at 27 Th Crescent, Woodlands, Doncaster and are shown as Ernest 30 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Lavinia 33 yrs and their children Hilda 9 yrs a scholar, Henry Ernest 7 yrs, Noel Frank 5 yrs, Norah 3 yrs and Connie 11 months of age. Following his death his widow Lavinia was awarded a pension of 36 shillings and 3 pence a week which commenced on 14th January 1918.
He was a coal miner in the 1911 census.

Worcestershire Regiment
Private Ernest Marlowe enlisted at Doncaster whilst residing at Woodlands, Doncaster, he initially served with the service number 1438 in the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He was serving with the 1st battalion Worcestershire Regiment when he died of wounds on 4th July 1917, he is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium
