John Thomas Pickbourne was born in 1890 at Hucknall and was the son of Emma Pickbourne , his mother was born in 1871 at Hucknall , she married Samuel Berrisford on 17th May 1891 at Shirland, Derbyshire. In the 1911 census John Thomas is living with his widowed mother at Stonebroom Alfreton, Derbyshire and they are shown as , Emma Berresford 40 yrs a widow , she is living with her children John Thomas Pickbourne 21 yrs a coal loader, and Lucy Berresford 16 yrs, Isabel Berresford 13 yrs Samuel Berresford 4 yrs and Elsie Berresford 1 year old. John Thomas Pickbourne married his wife Margaret Roper on 18th August 1912, their marriage was recorded in the Chesterfield Registration District they lived at Main Road, Shirland, Alfreton, Derbyshire.

Lance Corporal John Thomas Pickbourne, enlisted at Mansfield on 3rd September 1914, aged 25 yrs and 12 days but was discharged on 27th October 1914 as being unlikely to become an efficient soldier after being diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis. However, he re-enlisted at Clay Cross and served on the Western Front after landing in France on 14th July 1915.Serving with the 2nd Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment, formerly Sherwood Foresters, he was killed in action on 24th April 1918. He is buried in Adelaide Cemetery, Villers-Bretonneux.
