Hucknall
James was born in 1895 in Hucknall and was the son of John a coal miner and Mary Roberts nee Bettridge , they lived at Old Fallow, Cannock Staffordshire . His father John was born in 1864 in Heath Town Staffordshire and his mother Mary Bettridge was born in 1872 in Stonebroom, Derbyshire they were married in 1890 , the marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District they had a total of 9 children , sadly however 5 of them died in infancy or early childhood prior to 1911. Their surviving children were ; James b1895 Hucknall, Susan b1898 Hucknall, Mary b1900 Clowne, Derbyshire and John b1909 Old Fallow, Cannock. In the 1911 census the family are living at Old Fallow, Cannock Staffordshire and are shown as John 47 yrs a coal miner he is living with his wife Mary 39 yrs and their children, James 16 yrs a coal miner, Susan 13 yrs scholar, Mary 11 yrs a scholar, and John 2 yrs.
He was a former miner at Hucknall No. 1 Colliery

9th Bn Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Corporal James Roberts, enlisted in Hucknall he initially served with the service number 83355 in the Royal Field Artillery before transferring to, 9th Battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). His award of the Military Medal was announced in the London Gazette on 16th November 1916, he was killed in action on 9th April 1917. He is buried in Bailleul Road West Cemetery, St. Laurent Blangy, Pas de Calais grave reference A 16.
