Alfred Whitehall was born in 1892 at Hucknall and was the son of the late Samuel a coal miner and Emma Whitehall née Harrison. His father Samuel was born in 1859 at Foleshill, Warwickshire and died in 1900 at Mansfield aged 42 yrs. His mother Emma Harrison was born in 1868 at Annesley, they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they had 6 children, sadly one died in infancy their surviving children were all born in Hucknall and were John b1885, Samuel b1887, Eva b1899, Eliza 1890 and Alfred b1892. In the 1911 census Alfred is living at 62 Church Drive, Shirebrook with his elder married brother John and his family and are shown as John 26 yrs a coal miner, married he is living with his wife Rachel 30 yrs and their children Elsie 5 yrs, Samuel 3 yrs, Eliza 2 yrs and Thomas 4 months, Alfred is 18 yrs a brother working as a pony driver at a colliery.

2nd Bn Grenadier Guards
Private Alfred Whitehall, enlisted at Hucknall on 27th January 1913 served with the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards. He landed in France on 13th August 1914 and he was killed in action on 14th September 1914 at Soupir, he is Commemorated on La Ferte-sous-Jouarre Memorial,
In memoriam published 15rh September 1915 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WHITEHALL. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Alfred Whitehall, killed in action between the 14th and 16th September, 1914, at Souper, in the battle of Aisne, aged 22 years.
