William Arthur Spencer was born in 1892 at Basford and was the son of William a coal miner hewer and Alice Spencer née Griffin of 192 Vernon Road, Old Basford, Nottingham. His father William wasa born in 1857 at Bedworth, his mother Alice Griffin was born in 1867 at Pinchbeck, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 10 children sadly 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their children were William Arthur b1892, Thomas Frederick b1894, Frances Eden 1895, Eva 1897 and Anna b1905 all were born in Basford. In the 1911 census the family are residing at 18 Wilton Terrace, Wilton Street, Old Basford and are shown as William 54 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Alice 44 yrs and their children, William 19 yrs a furnance man, Fred 17 yrs a pottery labourer, Frances Eden 16 yrs occupation illegible, Eva 14 yrs a tobacco worker, and Anna 6 yrs of age.
In the 1911 census he is a furnace man

1/8th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private William Arthur Spencer enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Old Basford, he served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 26th September 1917 and is buried at New Irish Farm Cemetery.
His brother Thomas Frederick Spencer also served during the 'Great War' he served wit the service number 36234 in the 20th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he survived the war.
