Arthur was the son of Herbert and Sarah Elizabeth Flinders née Wood. His father was born in 1863 at Radford and his mother in 1863 at Weedon in Buckinghamshire. They were married in Nottingham on 15th May 1887. Arthur's siblings, both born at Sheffield, were Herbert b.1889 and Albert b.1891. Herbert died in 1893 in Nottingham aged 30 and on 11th February 1889 Sarah married Albert Bolton. Sarah and Albert had five children all born in Nottingham: Thomas, Alma, Frank, Alec and Louis. In 1911 they lived at 1 Albion Terrace Standhill Road Carlton. Arthur married Gertrude Howitt in 1913 at Nottingham and they lived at 114 Montpelier Road Dunkirk Nottingham.
In 1911 he worked as a colour grinder for an ink manufacturer. He worked for 8 years for Atkin Brothers, Radford.

18th Bn The King's (Liverpool Regiment)
Arthur Flinders enlisted in Nottingham and served with North Midland Division Cycle Corps and then transferred to the 18th Battalion King's Liverpool Regiment . He was shot by a sniper and killed.
Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged) 10 March 1917: 'Flinders. Killed in action in February, Private Arthur Flinders of Dunkirk. Eight years with Atkin Brothers, Radford. Wife.' Avesnes-Le-Comte Communal Cemetery Extension Grave Reference: IV B 19
